Leongatha Community Garden
& The Commons!
Grow, Connect, Flourish Together

Freshness you can measure in footsteps!

The potatoes hitting the table at The Commons Market this Saturday haven’t spent days in a truck—they’ve traveled exactly 25 steps to get to you!!
We believe that in a fractious world, the best way forward is to look inward. By supporting our local growers, we’re creating a food system that is self-sustainable and independent of global disruptions.
You are a huge part of this! Every purchase you make helps us increase the amount of local produce we can stock.
Come grab a bag of the freshest potatoes in town and help us grow a more resilient future together.

See you at the market!
Every Saturday.
3-5 Howard Street, Leongatha
8:30am - 11:00am

Membership Growth

LCG has officially become "the place to be".
  • Record Membership: We currently have 150 members, dwarfing the national average of 20–50 members per community garden.
  • Waitlist: For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have an active wait list for plots.
  • Member Obligations: To maintain this high-demand space, "plotters" must keep their beds and the surrounding areas weed-free. All members are required to attend at least one working bee per year.

Building a better food system, one Saturday at a time

Dear Community,

At the Commons Market (Leongatha Community Garden), we believe that the way we eat has the power to change the world. That is why every Saturday, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am, we gather with a specific quest: to rebuild our local food system from the ground up.

Why a weekly fresh food market? Building a sustainable alternative to industrial food chains requires rhythm. By offering fresh food weekly, we provide our local growers with the stability they need to thrive and offer you a reliable source of nourishment. Consistency is the bridge between a "good idea" and a permanent community fixture.

We are working toward a future where our food is grown by neighbours, not corporations. We believe that by focusing on "one plate at a time," we make the monumental task of food sovereignty manageable and personal.

The outcome we deserve — a healthy, sovereign, and connected community — won't happen overnight and we have a long way to go.  However, it will be the direct result of our collective efforts and your unwavering support. Every Saturday you support us is a brick in the foundation of the food system we all want to see.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

We’ll see you this weekend.

With gratitude,

The Commons Market Volunteer Team

Winter Gardening Tips!

Here are your quick winter gardening tips for South Gippsland:

  • Protect against Frosts - Heavy frosts can hit inland areas like Leongatha hard. Keep frost-tender plants or young seedlings safe with cloches, row covers, or a heavy layer of straw mulch.

  • Plant Alliums and Brassicas - June and July are the perfect time to get garlic cloves and shallots into the ground. You can also continue planting out winter-hardy greens like kale, spinach, and silverbeet.

  • Prune and Clean - Winter is prime time for maintenance. Prune your deciduous fruit trees, grapevines, and berry canes while they are dormant to encourage strong spring growth and clear out any diseased wood.

  • Plant Bare-Rooted Crops - Head to the local nursery to grab bare-root fruit trees, roses, and rhubarb crowns. Planting them now gives them time to establish their root systems before the spring rush.

  • Practice "Plotter Pride" - Take advantage of quieter days to clean and sharpen your garden tools, wash seed trays, and keep the common paths clear of slippery weeds and winter debris.

STAY SAFE IN THE GARDEN &

THE COMMONS

While we love seeing you getting your hands dirty, it's important to remember that gardening can be dangerous if you're not careful. Please keep these safety tips in mind:

*   Wear gloves when using sharp tools to prevent cuts.

*   Wear shoes with good traction to help prevent trips and slips.

*   Be aware of your surroundings and take breaks often.

If you have any questions about safety, please don't hesitate to ask one of our volunteers. We are here to help!

Thank you for being a part of our incredible community. We look forward to seeing you in the garden!
