LCG has officially become "the place to be".
  • Record Membership: We currently have 150 members, dwarfing the national average of 20–50 members per community garden.
  • Waitlist: For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have an active waitlist for plots.
  • Member Obligations: To maintain this high-demand space, "plotters" must keep their beds and the surrounding areas weed-free. All members are required to attend at least one working bee per year.

The Commons Weekly Market- off to a great start!

Part of the Vic Health Local Partnerships for Food First, the Bass Coast South Gippsland Food System Alliance strives to make it easier for people to get healthy and affordable, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Commons at the Leongatha Community Garden has launched a weekly Saturday market to offer fresh fruit and vegetables and, where possible, locally sourced produce. Currently supplemented by the fabulous Grow Lightly growers, we are aiming to transition to supply the majority of vegetables from the Commons and other local gardens over the coming months.

Summer Gardener Award!

FEF54AA6-606B-42C3-AFC2-91E703D66AEC_edited.jpg
Congratulations to Community Garden members, Michael Kuyer and family, our Summer Gardener Award winners!

In talking about his "outstanding bounty" of melons and tomatoes Michael said,  "Hopefully it brings a bit of cheer and maybe even inspires others to get involved, plant something new, or enjoy the simple win of growing their own food. It’s great to see what a shared space can become with a bit of care and consistency. of a small, well-tended plot".  His success is an inspiration.

Our new raised plots provide a fantastic base but the skill is in all the small details and timing.   The community garden is such a great place to learn, with experienced gardeners willing to share their tips and tricks.

Thank you Kuyer family for sharing your sweet success!

Autumn Gardening Tips!

Here are your quick autumn gardening tips for South Gippsland:

  • Recharge Your Soil: Use compost or liquid fertilisers like worm juice and seaweed to replenish nutrients after the heavy summer harvest.

  • Plant "Cool Crops" Now: Get your broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts in the ground while the soil is still warm to ensure they are established before winter frosts.

  • Sow Roots and Greens: February and March are the ideal window for beetroot, onions, leeks, and lettuce.

  • Check Your Harvest: Pick pumpkins and squash once the stems turn "corky" but before the heavy autumn rains arrive to prevent rot.

  • Ripen Green Tomatoes: If the weather turns, pull the whole tomato plant and hang it upside down in a shed to finish ripening indoors.

  • Practice "Plotter Pride": Clear out summer remains and ensure the areas around your beds are weed-free to keep the community space tidy.

STAY SAFE IN THE GARDEN &

THE COMMONS

While we love seeing you getting your hands dirty, it's important to remember that gardening can be dangerous if you're not careful. Please keep these safety tips in mind:

*   Wear gloves when using sharp tools to prevent cuts.

*   Wear shoes with good traction to help prevent trips and slips.

*   Be aware of your surroundings and take breaks often.

*   Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen and a hat.

If you have any questions about safety, please don't hesitate to ask one of our volunteers. We are here to help!

Thank you for being a part of our incredible community. We look forward to seeing you in the garden!

Important Notice

We are saddened and disappointed to report the ongoing theft of vegetables from numerous members' plots within the Leongatha Community Garden.
This is a serious breach of trust and respect for the hard work and dedication of our members. These plots are cultivated by individuals who invest their time, money, and effort into growing food for their own personal consumption.
The member's plots are not a public food bank or a source of free produce. The garden is a space for our members to collectively garden and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
We urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward. We will be reviewing security measures and taking appropriate action to prevent future occurrences.
This theft is not only a loss for the individuals affected but also a disheartening blow to the spirit of our community garden.
Please respect the hard work and property of our members.
Sincerely,
The Leongatha Community Garden Committee
