Hi Garden Members,

Get ready for summer!

It's time for our Pre-Summer Twilight Working Bee to get the garden, particularly the shared spaces in tip-top shape before the warmer weather truly kicks in.

We invite you to join your fellow gardeners this Thursday, November 27th, starting at 4:30 PM.

Event Details:

  • What: Pre-Summer Twilight Working Bee

  • When: Thursday, November 27th

  • Time: Working starts at 4:30 PM

  • Social: BBQ and drinks from 6:00 PM

The goal of the bee is simple: weeding, tidying, and generally getting the garden beautiful and manageable for the summer season ahead.

Please remember to bring your own gardening gloves and any favourite hand tools.

The BBQ is entirely FREE as a small thank you for your efforts and a great chance to catch up with other members!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Happy Gardening,

Neil Barrett

Harvesting Health: Local Food Alliance Blossoms with Major Grant!

Imagine a region where fresh, affordable, locally grown produce is within easy reach for everyone. Where skills in growing and preserving food flourish from childhood to adulthood. Where communities are healthier, fairer, more sustainable, and resilient in the face of challenges.

This is the ambitious and vital goal of the Bass Coast South Gippsland Food System Alliance.

The first true warmth presses upon the soil, releasing a rich, loamy scent that mingles with the perfume of daffodils and the buzz of bees among the rosemary. Emerald spears of garlic shoot skyward, and broad bean plants are suddenly adorned with curious black-and-white flowers. The garden exhales: its winter slumber broken by wrens flitting through apple trees and the constant, soft chatter of gardeners reunited in the sun.

Seed packets are torn open, their contents nestled into the softened earth. There is a palpable energy in the shared laughter, the easy exchange of seedlings, and the quiet satisfaction of tender green shoots unfurling towards the lengthening light. This is the season of collective anticipation, where every planted seed is a pact with the future, and the garden thrums with the vibrant, hopeful heartbeat of growth renewed.

What to plant in Spring?

Spring Gardening Tips

Here are a few tips to help you get your garden ready for the new season:

- Order summer-flowering bulbs and seeds. You can also start sowing some summer crops like tomatoes and cucumbers.

- Tidy up your flower beds and borders by raking up any leaves or debris to prevent pests and diseases.

- Clean out and wash your greenhouse before spring.

Garden Guru Corner: Companion Planting

This spring, why not try companion planting in your bed? It’s a natural way to deter pests and improve growth! Try planting:

- Basil with your tomatoes to repel flies and mosquitoes.

- Nasturtiums near your cucumbers to lure aphids away.

- Borage with your strawberries to improve their flavour and deter pests.

Important Notice

We are saddened and disappointed to report the ongoing theft of vegetables from numerous members' plots within the Leongatha Community Garden.
This is a serious breach of trust and respect for the hard work and dedication of our members. These plots are cultivated by individuals who invest their time, money, and effort into growing food for their own personal consumption.
The member's plots are not a public food bank or a source of free produce. The garden is a space for our members to collectively garden and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
We urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward. We will be reviewing security measures and taking appropriate action to prevent future occurrences.
This theft is not only a loss for the individuals affected but also a disheartening blow to the spirit of our community garden.
Please respect the hard work and property of our members.
Sincerely,
The Leongatha Community Garden Committee
