Big News from the Garden: This winter, the Leongatha Community Garden and The Commons has reached a milestone we’re bursting with pride to share — nearly 130 members now nurture this thriving green heart together! Whether you tend a plot, volunteer at The Commons, or simply share coffee, you’re part of a movement proving that community grows deeper roots than any crop.
Why This Matters - 130 members means:
- More wisdom shared across generations at workshops and working bees.
- More hands turning compost, planting natives, and caring for plants and our chickens.
- More joy in the simple moments: a shared lunch, or birdsong in the garden.
This is what “community-led” looks like – and it’s thriving!
Activities for EVERY Member (Plotter or Not!)
No garden plot? No problem! Here’s how you can dig in:
For the Social Butterflies
- Morning Cuppa: Warm up with monthly morning cuppa social 10am on the first Wednesday of every month and other events in the warmer months.
For the Curious Learners
- Free Workshops: Native tree propagation, composting, seed-saving (coming in Spring) – no experience needed!
For the Hands-On Helpers
- Commons Crew: Growing something unique and special at the Commons and turning scraps into garden gold (Tuesday & Saturday mornings).
- Chicken Champions: Join the feeding/egg collecting roster.
- The Seed Savers: Help collect and pack local vegetable seeds for members and for sale.
The Commons isn’t just land – it’s belonging. Grow food; grow friends; grow connections.
Together, we’re:
- Building resilience (sharing harvests after storms).
- Nurturing wellbeing (quiet benches for reflection).
- Creating legacy (planting fruit and nut trees our grandkids will enjoy the rewards from).
- Championing excellence (in how we grow, share, and steward this land).
Join the Celebration!
New members, old friends – let’s connect!
- Sunday: July 27 Winter Working Bee (10 AM). Bring gloves for a quick communal area tidy-up, then share soup and sourdough!
- Plot Waitlist? Encourage friends and family members to join as a “Friend of the Garden” ($15/year) to access all events while they decide on a plot or wait for one.

See you at the Garden or in The Commons or both!!
